READING

̃  Students are experienced     readers who use appropriate      reading strategies to understand a variety of material

̃  Easily apply reading strategies, such as using context clues,            re-reading, self-correcting, reading with others, predicting, questioning, clarifying and summarizing

̃  Dramatize interpretations of readings

̃  Work with others to build text interpretations

̃  Manage reading longer and with more difficult texts

Reading Comprehension

̃  Students read for a variety of purposes:  to comprehend,            interpret, evaluate and appreciate a wide range of materials

̃  Select favorite authors and types of reading

̃  Identify recurring themes

̃  Make inferences and draw         conclusions about events,            characters, settings

̃  Discuss the impact of authors’ word choices and content

Literature Appreciation

̃  Students read from a wide variety of books and other materials

̃  Read fiction and non-fiction literature from a variety of cultures

̃  Read several books in depth about one subject or several books by the same writer

WRITING

̃  Students organize thoughts and           information for writing, develop drafts, analyze, revise and edit work

̃  Organize ideas for writing

̃  Include appropriate facts and details when writing

̃  Revise work by combining sentences, adding details, changing words to create an engaging opening sentence and         satisfying conclusion

̃  Proofread own writing or the writing of others, using dictionaries and other       resources

̃  Continue to develop a controlling idea that conveys a perspective on the       subject

̃  Write effectively for a variety of     purposes and audiences

̃  Write to inform the reader (example: creating reports)

̃  Maintain a focus throughout the piece of writing

̃  Organize their writing in such a way that a reader can follow what they are saying

̃  Write to persuade the reader

̃  Clearly state their point of view

̃  Anticipate the reader’s                counterarguments

̃  Write to tell a story

LISTENING & SPEAKING

̃  Students listen, understand,     evaluate, and speak effectively

̃  Ask appropriate questions and      respond to the questions of others

̃  Use appropriate grammar, word choice and pacing during formal oral presentations

̃  Summarize information

̃  Listen attentively to others’ points of view

̃  Use language that is clear, audible, and appropriate for communicating

̃  Effectively give oral presentations to an audience
